Newsround: Democracy at School
Kids Learn the Importance of Voting
This week is the general election, and today we have a special Newsround. We visited a school to learn about how democracy works and why it matters.
What is Democracy?
Democracy is a system of government where people have the power to make decisions about the laws and policies that affect their lives. In a democracy, people vote to choose leaders who represent their interests and make decisions on their behalf.
The general election is a chance for people in the United Kingdom to vote for the party they think will do the best job of running the country. The party with the most votes will form the government and their leader will become the Prime Minister.
Why is Democracy Important?
Democracy is important because it gives people a voice in how their country is run. It allows people to have a say in the decisions that affect their lives and to hold their leaders accountable.
Democracy is also important because it helps to protect people's rights and freedoms. In a democracy, people are free to express their opinions, to vote for the candidates they want, and to hold their leaders accountable.
